Accelerating Process Improvement Using Agile Techniques

Chapter 12: Maturity Phase: Step 4 Training

Training can play a pivotal role in the acceptance or rejection of a developed process. Special care should be taken with training in order to get buy-in from the process users. This period of time should be used to tailor the process to meet any specific user needs as well as train the user on the process. Proper training will make the difference between whether the process is used or shelved. If it is understood and easy to use, it will be used.

Training Methods

There are some great techniques and methods that can be used to accomplish training. The proper tool will be dependent upon the trainer, the organization, the staff, and the available tools for accomplishing the training. Some helpful methods are discussed below.

Classroom versus Workshops versus Online Training

Video conferencing, CD-ROM, and the Internet are throwing open the doors of access to training. Classroom training is typically more of a lecture type of training, whereas workshops bring some level of hands-on experience to the participants and online training is accomplished using a computer. Any of these methods are effective but each one has advantages and disadvantages.

Instruction-led training such as classroom or workshop training does not ensure that the same training is given every time, whereas online training ensures that training is consistent. Online training has been gaining in popularity mostly due to:

  • Ease of use

  • Consistency

  • Content integrity

  • Scalability.

If the resources are available, this type of training can be effectively used for process training.
