Die Design Fundamentals, 3rd Edition

Most dies designed for hand feeding of strip are provided with two guide posts applied at the back of the die set. This type gives maximum visibility and accessibility because it is open on three sides. A back-post die set is also used when scrap stock is to be employed for producing small blanks. Scrap material is usually very irregular in shape; other guide post arrangements can interfere with positioning.
There are three distinct types of back-post die sets (Figure 17.29):
Regular. This type is used for dies with average proportions.
Long. This type is used for dies that are long and narrow.
Reverse. This type is used for dies that are relatively longer in measurement from front to back than their measurement from side to side.
Back-post die sets are made in five different styles or shapes (Figure 17.30):
This style is the most common. It is used for small- and medium-size die sets ranging from 3 by 3 inches (76 by 76 mm) to about 16 by 18 inches (40.6 by 457 mm) in both semi-steel and steel.
Large semi-steel die sets ranging from 22 1/2 by 6 inches (571 by 152 mm) to 25 by 14 inches (635 by 355 mm) have sides wider than the distance over the posts, as shown.
