A

ADAPTOR
A block used to mount a die to a press slide.
AERIAL CAM
A cam attached to the punch holder with a driver on the die holder. Also called a flying cam.
AIR BEND DIE
A die in which the blank is bent without it sticking to the bottom of the die. Blank contact with the die is made at only three lines: the nose line of the punch and the two edges of the die opening.
AIR BENDING
Sheet metal-forming operation in which a workpiece is bent without the punch and die closing completely on the workpiece.
AIR CUSHION
Actuated by a large pressurized cylinder, located beneath the bed of a press, used to apply upward pressure to the lower die.
AIR DRAW
A draw operation performed in a singleaction press with blank holder pressure supplied by an air cushion.
AIR HARDENING
The process by which an alloy steel is heated to the proper hardening temperature and then allowed to cool in air.
AISI
Acronym for American Iron and Steel Institute.
ALLOY
Pure metal that has been melted together with other chemical elements, forming a new metal structure having specific physical and mechanical properties.
ALUMINUM
Lightweight chemical element of a silver-white metallic color. Aluminum has an atomic number of 13, a melting point of 650 C, and a boiling point of 2450 C. Aluminum is denoted by the symbol Al.
