Metallic element. CAS number: 7440-43-9. An alloying element. Lowers melting point of certain alloys when used in low percentages. Used for protective coatings on metals, especially copper and steel (in electroplating); bearing metals such as babbitt, and low-melting alloys such as solders; brazing alloys; a deoxidizer in aluminum, nickel and silver alloys; control rods for reactors. Corrosion resistance is poor in industrial atmospheres; tarnishes in moist air. Highly toxic; carcinogenic, and the powder is flammable.
