impact resistance
The amount of force or energy required to fracture a standard-size sample in an impact test such as the Izod or Charpy test. The resistance is expressed in terms of the number of foot-pounds or meter-kilograms of force required to break the specimen with a single blow. Sometimes called impact energy or impact value.
impact test
Tests to determine the shock resistance or toughness of a metal when subjected to high rates of loading, usually in bending, tension, or torsion. The quantity measured is the energy absorbed in breaking the specimen by a single blow, as in the Charpy or Izod tests.
