Chapter Y: Y Yttrium

Y
Symbol for the element yttrium.
Y-alloy
An aluminum alloy used for casting. Contains aluminum, 4% copper, 2% nickel, 1.5% each of magnesium, silicon, and iron.
y-axis
The vertical axis on the Cartesian coordinate system, or coordinate plane.
Yb
Symbol for the element ytterbium.
yellow brass
(1) A general name for brass castings; (2) alloys nominally containing 65-67% copper, 34-37% zinc. Melt at 1639 F/893 C; having good ductility, high strength, corrosion resistance, and can with stand severe cold-working.
yellow brass, leaded
Alloys nominally containing 67-70% copper, 25-29% zinc, 3% lead, 1% tin, and good machinability.
yellow gold
Alloy nominally containing 53% gold, 25% silver, and 22% copper.
yield point
(1) The point at which stresses and trains become equal, so that deformation occurs. The point at which the stresses equal the elasticity of a test piece; (2) the initial stress in a material, usually less than the maximum attainable stress at which an increase in strain occurs without an increase in stress. Only certain metals exhibit a yield point. If there is a decrease in stress after yielding, a distinction may be made between upper and lower yield points.
yield strength
The stress at which a material exhibits a specified deviation from proportionality of stress and strain. The deviation is expressed in terms of strain. An offset of 0.2% is generally used for many metals.
Yoloy
A steel alloy containing 96.7% iron, 1% copper, 2% nickel, 0.15-0.2% carbon, and small amounts of phosphorus.
