T
The abbreviation for absolute temperature. The symbol for critical temperature (T c).
Ta
Symbol for the element tantalum.
tachometer
An instrument used to measure angular velocity, as of a shaft, either by registering directly the number of rotations during a specified period of time, as revolutions per minute.
tack welds
Small welds made to hold parts of a weldment in proper alignment until the final welding is finished.
tailstock
Also referred to as dead-center. A movable fixture opposite the headstock on a lathe. The tailstock is movable and can be clamped along the bed of the lathe. It contains a spindle that does not turn, but is adjustable (it can be moved in and out) and is used to support one end of a workpiece. The tapered hole of the tailstock also accepts tools for drilling operations including drill chucks, tapered shank drills, and reamers.
tailstock setover
The amount that the tailstock or dead-center on a lathe is offset from the headstock during the turning of tapers.
tall oil
Also known as liquid rosin. Used in cutting oils, lubricants, and greases. Obtained from the treatment of the spent liquor when pine wood is made into pulp. Combustible.
tang
(1) A file term use to describe the narrow, tapered, or pointed end of a file that fits into a wooden handle. While the blade is hard and brittle, the tang is tempered to be soft and tough as it would otherwise be easily broken...
