Integrated Waterflood Asset Management

Chapter 4: Waterflood Data

Throughout the life of a reservoir, from exploration to abandonment, a great amount of multidisciplinary data are collected (Fig. A-1). [1] Figure 4-1 shows a list of data collected before and during production. An integrated approach involving all functions is necessary to develop an efficient data management program, which plays a key role in reservoir management [1]. It requires planning, justification, prioritizing and timing to lay down the foundation of reservoir management.

Appendix C presents the basic geoscience and engineering data required for reservoir management. The appendix also presents a general discussion on data acquisition, analysis, validation, storing and retrieval, application, and examples. [1] This chapter presents specific laboratory and field data required for waterflood asset management.

Laboratory Data

Laboratory data needed for waterflood are:

  • Fluid properties

  • Rock properties

  • Flow properties

  • Residual oil saturation

  • Water quality

Fluid Properties

The fluids contained within a reservoir are usually water, gas, and liquid hydrocarbons. Their properties are highly dependent upon the reservoir pressure and temperature in addition to their composition. The composition and properties of the fluids are determined by laboratory tests, depending upon the type of fluids present, and the sampling methods used, i.e., equilibrium flash or differential liberation. In the flash liberation test, the reservoir oil, either a subsurface sample or a recombination of surface samples from separators and stock tanks, is charged into a pressure vessel at reservoir...
