Defining of Strategic Assets

Strategic assets are defined at the functional or tactical level of organizations. They are the set of abilities, capacities and capabilities that are necessary for us to achieve the strategic goals we have set out to achieve. This is the last level within the hierarchy of goals that needs to be created within the MSC structure.

When the strategic level indicators and plans are created they illustrate the need for development of certain aspects of performance. This is often in a wide range of areas covering the human, physical, information and even the knowledge assets of a corporation. It is represented by a series of indicators that are then used to measure the results of the initiatives.

Although some indicators sit more comfortably at this level, there are not specific functional level indicators as such. Most indicators can be used at any level depending on the corporate goals and focus of the company itself. For example, the indicator of maintenance cost effectiveness (unit costs of maintenance) can be used at the corporate level, or it could be broken down into its component parts and used at strategic or functional levels.

This could mean a measure of cost effectiveness of maintenance at the corporate level, a measure of the cost effectiveness of scheduled maintenance at the strategic level, and a measure of the cost effectiveness of work teams at the functional level.
