The majority of this book has focused on what the MSC is. However, it is also important to understand what it is not. The MSC is not merely a list of indicators that can be used to measure performance of equipment and people. This is a common misconception regarding the MSC and the effort required to implement it, one that often leads people to believe that the work lies merely in defining a table of indicators. However, the MSC is a tool for the development and implementation of strategy, and for monitoring progress toward the goals outlined in the strategy.
As with any improvement strategy, the manner with which it is implemented in a company is fundamental to whether or not it will ultimately be successful. This is particularly true for the MSC when implemented from the corporate levels initially. The chapter s intention is to detail how successful implementations of the MSC can be managed to produce the best results.
