Total Hours of Maintenance Labor Dedicated to Correcting Defects

This indicator is extremely useful in understanding further areas for future improvement. The underlying concept of this indicator is to display the hours of maintenance labor used to correct defects that are noted in equipment. In keeping with other concepts of cost effectiveness, this indicator should not include tasks that have been analyzed and assigned the maintenance policy of run-to-fail.

This index is best used with assets where comprehensive failure management regimes have already been established. This is due to the fact that these tasks have already been analyzed for cost effectiveness. It has already been determined that their level of consequence, combined with their costs of repair and the cost of maintenance, is best managed via a strategy option of run-to-fail. Other indicators have been listed to revise the accuracy of these policy decisions.

Benefits- If implemented correctly this indicator will provide the ability to target equipment failures that are eating into operational spending. If the defects noted have been accurately coded, then this indicator can have sub-sets that relate to other perspectives within the MSC. These could include defects with potential or actual safety consequences, defects with potential or actual quality consequences, or defects with potential or actual environmental consequences
