Resource Allocation in Hierarchical Cellular Systems

The name "channel allocation strategy" is given to the technique used to make the most efficient and equitable use of the available radio spectrum, by the way in which channels are allocated to calls, and channels to cells and hierarchical levels on a fixed or dynamic basis.
The first step in any WCMTS is to divide the spectrum allocation into a set of disjoint noninterfering radio channels so that they can be used simultaneously in an area of service, while maintaining an acceptable received radio signal in each [1]. Then, using a suitable MAS, physically scattered users can share a common uplink (UL). This is a very important design issue for efficient and fair utilization of the available system resources. A good MAS can improve system capacity, lower system cost, and make the service more attractive to users in terms of fewer dropped calls and interruptions [2]. Simpler types of MAS such as time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), and CDMA merely use the total available spectrum to form such channels in ways with which the reader will be familiar. From these, more complex techniques consisting of a combination of two or more MASs may be used to generate a set of disjoint channels.
