Chapter 3: Who Should be a Remote Worker?

As stated in Chapter 1, there are estimated to be over 2 million remote workers in the United Kingdom. With the working population estimated at 20 million, this is a significant minority that will cross many industry, occupational and role boundaries. The jobs that these people do vary considerably; all they have in common is that they are remote workers. The purpose of this chapter is to help define who might be, or become, a remote worker and to provide guidelines for deciding if a role is suitable for remote delivery.

Note

In this book the word organization has been chosen to represent any group wishing to implement remote working. This includes government (both local and national) departments, health services, commercial enterprises, charities, political parties, and social support groups.
