Chapter 9: The Home Office Environment

Overview

Once workers are home-based, even if it is only for one day a week, then it follows that they need somewhere at home to work. This chapter outlines the factors that need to be taken into account when converting domestic space for business use. The focus is on 'office' environments, but some consideration is also given to some light engineering activities, such as minor maintenance of electronic equipment and food preparation. No attention has been given to specialist environments, for example for medical staff, who may require tailored facilities for reasons of hygiene etc. These are considered to be outside the scope of this book, and it is assumed that any organization considering such specialist remote working will have the appropriate expertise in-house to specify the appropriate working environment.
