5.1   INTRODUCTION

The control algorithm is the vital link between the wavefront sensor and the
wavefront corrector in an adaptive optics (AO) system for vision science. Its
function is to convert the wave aberration measurements made by the wavefront
sensor into a set of actuator commands that are applied to the wavefront
corrector to satisfy a suitable system performance criterion, either minimizing
the residual wave aberrations or presenting other wave aberrations to the
eye.

The goal of this chapter is to describe the control algorithms for a vision
science AO system both in the spatial and temporal domains. In Section 5.2,
the configurations that determine the spatial relationship between the wavefront
sensor lenslets and the wavefront corrector actuators are described. In
Sections 5.3 and 5.4, the calibration and control of the wavefront corrector
are described. In the last section, the AO system is represented as a set of
transfer functions and the temporal behavior of the AO system is also
given.
