Description
Gate or knife valves are linear motion valves designed to provide shut-off by sliding a flat closure element into the flow stream. They are typically divided into two types: parallel and wedge-shaped. Knife valves, a subset of gate valves, feature a sharp edge on the bottom of the gate to facilitate cutting through materials.
Working Principle
Gate and knife valves operate by moving a flat disc or gate into the path of the flow stream to stop the flow. The gate moves linearly, either opening or closing the valve. This design is particularly useful for applications requiring a full, unobstructed flow or complete shut-off. Advantages over other Air Valves
Knife gate valves offer specific advantages over other types of air valves, such as diaphragm valves. They are lighter due to their shorter face-to-face length compared to traditional gate valves. The design of knife gate valves allows them to handle slurries and viscous materials more effectively, which is a significant advantage in industries dealing with such substances.
Limitations
Gate and knife valves have certain limitations, including pressure limitations and a lack of cleanliness. They are not recommended for throttling applications as erosion of the seat and disc can occur due to vibrations. Additionally, they may not provide a tight shut-off in all situations.
