220v is an old adage, from way back when, most 220 hookups these days here in the US will range from around 230v to 240v . .... You can run one of the older type welders built back when 208v was a standard and that was designed to run on around 208v single phase … only around 200v like the old 208v average, it would soon burn out the transformer .

The best way to counteract that (without putting a transformer in your shop) is to also put all 240V single-phase loads in the 3-phase panel, making sure the high leg (usually B phase) is used in all of them .... Many 208v motors are 230v motors in disguise, 208v rating simply added to the data plate.
