The value of 50V was found empirically to be the output voltage level at which the prototype flyback converter ran in the discontinuous mode. As the output voltage is increased from near zero to 50V, the switching frequency is increased from 15kHzto 100kHz. The duty cycle of the 555 timer VCO also increases as the output voltage is increased.
