10.5 LAN: What Are the Key LAN Technologies I Should Know?

We discussed network servers in previous sections. Here, we'll discuss concepts regarding the network itself. This is the facility that moves the data between a personal computer in the Marketing department on the 3rd floor and the file server on the 70th floor.

Network technology is complicated. Don't hesitate to ask for help. Chances are that the VAR that is selling you your LAN equipment will provide some guidance and/or consulting expertise at little or no cost. The manufacturer of your key networking hardware may also be able to provide assistance in overall design to help you pick the best product for your needs and budget. Consider taking training classes on the related technologies and products. Ask your vendors for references of other customers using this equipment in a similar design contact these references and learn from any mistakes they may have made.

Network design is a topic that is the focus of entire careers, so it isn't something that can be covered in a few pages here. Instead, we'll review some of the major technology concepts and the issues that have to be considered when implementing them in a LAN. You need to understand these concepts and principles to ensure that your vendor isn't over-/underengineering your design.
