The Diecks Group in New York were approached by ESPN International to help it launch ESPNDeportes.com: a new Spanish-language Web site targeted to the Hispanic/Latin American market in the United States. ESPNDeportes.com is a separate entity from ESPN.com, with original content, original artwork, original events, and original programming. The challenge was to convey the appropriate Latin flavor while avoiding both Web commercial and Latin clich s.
One of the most popular sports for this market is soccer. A desire to abstract the organized chaos of soccer players running up and down the playing field led to a concept of colored boxes blinking, dashing, darting, and sliding rhythmically to a high-energy music track. These boxes frame images of sports and of the Web site content.
