ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation)
A compression technology used mainly in digital telephone systems.
AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format)
An audio file format, widely used on the Web, that supports several compression formats.
aLaw
A compression format used mainly for voice.
alpha channel
The upper bits of a display pixel encoding, which controlits opacity.
alternate track
A movie track that contains alternate data for another track. QuickTime chooses one track to be used when the movie is played. The choice may be based on such considerations as language.
anti-alias
To smooth the edges of an image by mixing its boundary pixels with the background color.
API (application programming interface)
The set of function calls, data structures, and other programming elements by which a structure of code (such as a system-level toolbox) can be accessed by other code (such as an application program).
applet
A Java program or code snippet that can be transmitted over a net-work and executed in a browser.
ASF (Advanced Streaming Format)
A file format developed by Microsoft for streaming.
aspect ratio
The ratio between the height and the width of an image.
asymmetric codec
A codec that compresses relatively slowly and decompresses rapidly.
AU
A digital audio format often used by UNIX systems.
AVI (Audio Visual Interleave)
A file format used by Video for Windows.
background color
The color of the background behind a sprite or other image.
bandwidth
The rate (in bits or bytes per second)...
