Artificial War: Multiagent-Based Simulation of Combat

Appendix 1: Enhanced Action Selection Logic

Appendix 1: Enhanced Action Selection Logic

While EINSTein s overall architecture, graphical user interface, and most of its agent functions (on both the user-accessible and the source-code levels) are all consistent with the descriptions provided in the main text of this book as of this writing (November 2003) many details of EINSTein design are still under active development. This means that some functionality may change in later versions, perhaps in significant ways. This technical appendix provides a brief tour of some of the algorithms that will be incorporated into future versions, focusing on a significantly enhanced action selection logic. Interested readers can use the ideas presented in this appendix as the basis for their own musing about possible conceptual extensions to the art of multiagent-based modeling, in general, and combat simulation, in particular.

In the version of EINSTein described in the main text of this chapter, the focus is on achieving a simple agent logic that tailored specifically for experimenting with military swarm dynamics. In future versions of EINSTein, the emphasis is shifting to designing a robust, multilayered agent-logic architecture, one that can gracefully scale the full spectrum of behaviors from large agent-swarms (as is currently handled by EINSTein, although the new architecture includes many enhanced abilities) to more intelligent behaviors on the squad and single-agent levels.

Loosely speaking, this shift of emphasis represents a shift away from describing the mutual interactions among many simple agents to designing an architecture that also describes interactions among a relatively...
