Cereal Grain Sorting by Impedance Spectroscopy Sensing

Overview

Determining the physical characteristics of cereal grain, oilseeds and soybeans is of great importance for improving the selection procedures in industrial cereal sorting. In this paper, we propose a novel technique based on three-dimensional inspection of individual grains by means of impedance spectroscopy. The presented approach is based on coupling independent methods, that combine capacitance measurements on frequencies in the kHz range with infra-red techniques. A first prototype has been constructed by means of finite element method simulations. Greater sorting performance has been achieved with respect to conventional pattern recognition techniques.

1. Introduction

The development of non-destructive and cheap methods for determining the physical characteristics of cereal grain, rice, coffee, oilseeds and soybeans is essential for improving the selection procedures1. A high quality sorting outcome and a large machine throughput are needed in the industrial seeds selection before grinding in mills. Especially for cereal grain, the most important crops in the world, a correct selection procedure allows grains, that do not have the right characteristics, to be removed in order to obtain the targeted quality of flower.
