7.9 User Plane

The lower layers of the U-plane are exactly the same as those of the C-plane (MAC and RLC). PDCP and BMC, however, exist only in the U-plane. The control of all the AS U-plane tasks is handled by the RRC. The U-plane is responsible for the transfer of user data, such as voice or application data, whereas the C-plane handles the control signaling and the overall resource management. See Figure 7.25.
