Mass Finishing Handbook

Chapter 25: Automation

OVERVIEW

In 1981 microprocessor-controlled vibratory machines were introduced. These machines allow the entire program of the vibratory process to be stored and controlled. Motor speed, rotation direction, weight angle displacement, process times, compound selection and rates, and rinsing operations can all be programmed with hydraulic motors providing adjustments (Doody 1981).

In previous chapters automation has been mentioned, but no significant discussion has been given to the topic. Many applications use "stand-alone" machines, which are operated without automation. Yet, in order to reduce costs as much as possible, site managers must consider what an appropriate amount of automation would be. Included in that consideration is the availability of good operators who are both knowledgeable and always in place to perform work both without automation and with it. Knowing the skill level and availability of it now and in the future helps users make the right equipment decisions.

Automation aspects in some measure parallel the topics discussed in Chapter 24. The topics include:

  • part processing (selecting details of a process)

  • part delivery and removal

  • compound delivery

  • media control

  • part separation

  • subsequent operations

  • part administration (for record/historical purposes)

Figure 25-1 provides an illustration of a large automated finishing system. It is a complete view of all considerations. Figure 25-2 shows a small centrifugal disk operation with some automation. Figure 25-3 provides a similar view of a larger centrifugal disk operation. Figure 25-4 provides a view of equipment to move media. Figure 25-5 shows a bowl vibratory machine with automated media loading and unloading.
