Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007

In this chapter, we will explore the layout of structural components for the commercial project begun in the last chapter. As we have seen, the design is a four-story structure of modest footprint. We will begin with the layout of the column bay grid. We will add framing members and explore how to incorporate these items into appropriate files within our project structure and revisit the Residential Project to create a foundation plan.
We will begin adding a Column Grid and Columns to a file that will be used as a typical layout on all floors. This grid layout will be added to each level of the project including bubbles and dimensions. We will then add Beams and Joists to complete the framing. The main tools covered in this chapter include the following:
Explore the Structural Member Catalog.
Explore the Structural Member Wizard.
Work with the Column Grid tools.
Annotate a Column Grid with bubbles and dimensions.
Create Structural Beams and Braces using automated layout routines.
Create a foundation Wall with integral footings.
A structural member is an AEC object that is used to represent Columns, Beams or Braces. Each structural member belongs to a style, which in turn must reference one or more "Structural Member Shapes.' The shape is simply the cross section of the structural member at a given point along its length. A structural member must contain at least one shape, but may have several.
