Modern Optical Engineering: The Design of Optical Systems, Fourth Edition

Chapter 19: Selected Lens Designs, Analyzed and Annotated

19.1 Introduction

This chapter consists entirely of the annotated ray analysis and design data for a number of additional lenses which have not appeared in the preceding pages of this text. Most of these designs were selected from Smith, Modern Lens Design, 2nd ed, New York, McGraw-Hill, 2005.

All of these designs are shown at a nominal focal length of 100 mm, regardless of the focal length at which they are likely to be used. While this makes the comparison of designs easy, when evaluating the performance one must be aware that, for example, a microscope objective may be used at a focal length which is one or two orders of magnitude smaller than 100 mm, and a telescope objective may well be used at a focal length an order of magnitude larger.

The intent of this chapter is twofold: (1) to provide examples and illustrations of the many design features and the techniques which are used in real lens designs. This is obviously for the benefit of those who are interested in learning more about the craft of lens design; and (2) to provide feasible starting points for those who wish to select or adapt a design configuration for their own particular application.
