9.9: Problems

9.9 Problems

The problems have been divided into basic categories as indicated below:

Undrained shear strength S u

9.1

An unconfined compression test is performed on an undisturbed specimen of saturated clay. The clay specimen has an initial diameter of 2.50 in. and an initial height of 6.0 in. The vertical force at the shear failure is 24.8 lb, and the dial gauge records 0.80 in. of axial deformation from the initial condition to the shear failure condition. Calculate the undrained shear strength s u of the clay and indicate its consistency.

9.2

For the clay in Prob. 9.1, an unconfined compression test was performed on a remolded specimen, and the undrained shear strength s u = 45 psf. Calculate the sensitivity value and classification of the clay.

9.3

Determine the unconfined compression strength q u and the undrained shear strength s u for the undisturbed clay specimen.

9.4

Determine the strain rate for the unconfined compression test performed on the undisturbed clay specimen.

9.5

As shown in Fig. 9.42, failure for the undisturbed soil specimen occurs on a shear surface that is inclined at 60 to the horizontal. What is the actual undrained shear strength on the shear surface?

9.6

Determine the sensitivity value S t and classification of the clay.

9.7

A laboratory vane shear test was performed on a saturated clay where the vane has a length H of 4.0 in. and a diameter D of 2.0 in. The maximum...
