Soil Testing Manual: Procedures, Classification Data, and Sampling Practices

Appendix C: Percolation Test Procedures

Overview

Figure C.1: This figure shows an example of the proposed construction of a single family dwelling in a rural area. The area delineated as "prop. disposal field" shows the location of the proposed subsurface sewage disposal system.

Figure C.2: Example of a two-compartment septic tank. ( Reproduced from the County of San Diego, undated.)

Purpose

To establish clear direction and methodology for percolation testing in San Diego County.

Background

"Hybridization" of percolation test procedures, concerns expressed by industry regarding percolation tests, and inconsistency in observed test methods have created a need to standardize a method that can be performed easily and will have results that can be duplicated on the basis of a single, countywide test.

Objective of the Test

Determine the area necessary to properly treat and maintain sewage underground, to size the disposal system with adequate infiltration surface on the basis of expected hydraulic conductivity of the soil and the rate of loading, and to provide for a system with long-term expectation of satisfactory performance.

Policy

All percolation testing in the county of San Diego shall follow procedures described herein. Any deviation shall be authorized only after receiving written approval by the Department of Environmental Health Services.
