Indexing / Multi-position Electric Rotary Actuators
Description
Indexing or multi-position electric rotary actuators are devices that drive components rotationally using electromagnetic power from a motor. They are designed to provide control and indexing capabilities, allowing for multiple position stops along their rotational path. These actuators can feature either a circular shaft or a table, with the former often including keyways and the latter providing a bolt pattern for mounting other components. They are available in both single and double shaft configurations, with adjustable angles via screws or other stop adjustments.
Working Principle
Electric rotary actuators operate by converting electromagnetic energy from a motor into rotational motion. This motion is controlled to allow for precise positioning at multiple stops along the actuator's stroke. The actuators can be adjusted for different angles, either on one side or both ends of the angular stroke, providing flexibility in positioning. They are useful because they offer precise control over rotational movement, which is essential in applications requiring accurate positioning and repeatability.
Applications
Electric rotary actuators are used in a wide range of applications. In semiconductor manufacturing, they are employed for precise positioning tasks. In the automotive industry, they are used in car seats for adjusting positions. They are also utilized in the electric power industry for high-power switching gears and in packaging applications. Additionally, they find use in laboratory and medical settings where precise control is necessary.
Advantages over other Electric Rotary Actuators
One advantage of indexing electric rotary actuators is their ability to provide multiple position stops, which is not always possible with other types of actuators. This feature makes them particularly useful in applications requiring complex positioning tasks. Additionally, their design can eliminate the limitations associated with mechanical components such as couplings and gearheads, which can introduce compliance issues and reduce mechanical stiffness.
Limitations
A limitation of electric rotary actuators is that they may not be suitable for applications requiring high torque or load capacities beyond their specified limits. They also have a maximum rotation angle, typically up to 360°, which may not be sufficient for applications requiring continuous rotation.
Considerations
When selecting an indexing electric rotary actuator, several factors should be considered. Initial costs can vary depending on the complexity and specifications of the actuator. Operating expenses are generally lower compared to hydraulic or pneumatic systems due to the efficiency of electric power. Durability and accuracy are key benefits, but maintenance costs should be considered, especially if the actuator is used in demanding environments. Replacement parts and maintenance requirements can also impact the overall cost of ownership.
