Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Thermistors

Description
Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors are thermally sensitive resistors whose resistance increases with an increase in temperature. They are primarily used for electric current control and are constructed from thermally sensitive materials such as silicons or polycrystalline ceramics.
Working Principle
PTC thermistors operate on the principle that their electrical resistance increases as the temperature rises. This behavior is opposite to that of Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors. PTC thermistors are particularly useful because they can act as self-regulating heating elements or as overcurrent protection devices. When the temperature reaches a certain threshold, the resistance increases sharply, limiting the current flow and preventing overheating or damage to electronic circuits.
Applications
PTC thermistors are commonly used as temperature limit switches in machines and systems. They are also employed in electric current control applications, such as in circuit protection devices where they act as resettable fuses. Specific examples include their use in motor protection, where they prevent overheating by limiting current flow when a certain temperature is exceeded.
Advantages over other Thermistors
PTC thermistors offer a high degree of stability and are particularly advantageous in applications where a specific temperature range is of interest. Their ability to sharply increase resistance at a threshold temperature makes them ideal for applications requiring precise temperature control or protection. Compared to NTC thermistors, PTCs are more suitable for applications involving temperature limit switching due to their predictable resistance change at specific temperatures.
Limitations
One limitation of PTC thermistors is their non-linearity, which can make them unsuitable for applications requiring precise temperature measurement across a wide range. Additionally, they may not perform well in extreme temperature conditions outside their specified operating range.
Considerations
When considering PTC thermistors for an application, it is important to evaluate the initial costs, which can vary depending on the material and design. Operating expenses are generally low due to their self-regulating nature, which reduces the need for additional control circuitry. PTC thermistors are durable and require minimal maintenance, but their accuracy can be limited by their non-linear response. Replacement and maintenance costs are typically low, making them a cost-effective solution for many applications.
