Chapter 2: Basic Concepts

Chapter 2: Basic Concepts
Overview
Now it is time to start using Oracle8. In this chapter we will learn how to verify that the Oracle8 server is ready to use, then look at how to create a database and which tools to use when working with the database.
Getting Started

If at any time the Oracle database is unavailable you are likely to receive the message shown in Figure 2.1 if you are using the GUI tools, or error ORA-1034, Oracle not available on a new connection attempt.

For the Oracle database, there are a minimum of three NT services that must be started and there are others which we will see later in this book. For now we will only concern ourselves with the two services which control the Oracle instance and the one controlling the network.
