Overview
This chapter is dedicated to one of the most important tasks for anyone responsible for managing a database: Backup and Recovery. The number of different options and methods for backing up is quite extensive in Oracle8, therefore what is written here is by no means a definitive list of features. The aim of this chapter is to provide only an appreciation of what is possible because entire books have been devoted to this subject.
Backing Up the Database
Ask DBAs what is the first management task they think of in respect of a database and the chances are that they will say backup. Backing up the database is one of the most important tasks that a DBA or Operations department has to perform. When we backup the database, a copy of the database is taken and stored somewhere else, so that if there are any problems with the master database, the backup copy can be used instead.
It is very important to develop and implement a backup strategy that is most appropriate for the way that you do business. Once the plan has been agreed upon, ask yourself this question; "how much information will we lose if we have to restore the database?" If the answer is "some", then the strategy is unsuitable and it must be revised. The objective of any backup strategy is to ensure that absolutely no data is lost from the database.
