Windows NT from Microsoft can be considered an operating system for the 1990s. Unlike other operating systems that were developed many years ago and have matured during that time, NT was not conceived until 1989, when the first specifications of the NT operating system were reviewed. We now live in an age where advances in the computer industry occur very rapidly. Therefore Microsoft wanted to develop an operating system that was:

portable, so that it can easily move from one processor architecture to another;

scalable and supported multiprocessing;

ready to provide distributed computing, by providing services such as file and print servers;

POSIX compliant;

class C2 level for security;

reliable and robust, and applications should not be able to corrupt the operating system;

fast and provides good performance.
Today Windows NT systems can be found in a very high percentage of IT departments.
