Overview
So far all the databases we have seen have been on the local computer. Today systems are usually quite complex, involving many databases scattered around an organization. In this chapter, we will see how easy it is to set up a distributed database environment.
Net8
All network access is done using software supplied with the Oracle database called Net8. Users of the Oracle7 database will know this software as SQL*Net. It is no longer called SQL*Net because now it does a lot more than send SQL statements around the network. Net8 is responsible for enabling clients to access any Oracle database anywhere on the network. It includes a comprehensive set of services which provide security, authentication, naming services and the ability to easily configure the network.
Net8 is very easy to install and set up. It creates a number of files, which are managed using Oracle Net8 Easy Config , found in the Oracle for Windows NT folder, which we will see how to use shortly. There are four essential components used by Net8:
? Net8 client
? Net8 server process service called TNSListener80
? Oracle Protocol Adaptors
? Network Protocol (e.g., TCP/IP)
