However, one can design and tune the biggest and fastest database in the world, but if it is too difficult to manage, it won't support your business. Instead, it will be a millstone around the DBAs neck. In this chapter, we will look at the various techniques that are available for managing the database.
Oracle Enterprise Manager
When it comes to managing the database, various methods are available. However, this is NT, and on NT one expects to use a graphical interface. Therefore, whenever possible, GUI tools will be used to perform the task, but there could be an alternative command using tools like Server Manager and SQL*Plus.
Throughout this book we have seen the graphical tools that are part of Oracle Enterprise Manager. So far, tools like SQL Worksheet and Schema Manager have been started directly and not invoked from the Enterprise Manager console. When we are managing the database some of the tasks can only be started from the Enterprise Manager console and as we progress through this chapter you should begin to appreciate the tasks that ideally should be started from the console.
