Oracle8 on Windows NT

Chapter 5: SQL

Chapter 5: SQL
Overview
This chapter will concentrate on how to use the SQL language against the Oracle database. SQL is to a database what wheels are to a car. Although in the beginning, database vendors had their own languages, today everyone communicates with the database using SQL plus their own special extensions.
A standard has been defined for the SQL language, therefore SQL written against one database engine should work against another database engine. In theory this is true, but every database vendor has extended SQL to support functionality in their own product. The Oracle8 server is no different, so don't be surprised if some of the SQL shown here works only against an Oracle8 database.
