Using SQL
There are two tools available for writing SQL statements in Oracle:
? SQL*Plus;
? SQL Worksheet.
SQL*Plus can be found in the Oracle for Windows NT program group. Before it starts, the user is prompted to enter a username and password and then a new window is created, as shown in Figure 5.1, into which the SQL statements can be written.

Anyone who has used Oracle on a platform other than NT will probably feel right at home using SQL*Plus. It is a very good tool, and behaves and looks like a typical command line tool. The author prefers to use SQL Worksheet, but any of the examples here can be used in either of these tools.
In SQL*Plus no help is available, so make sure the documentation is handy so that syntax can be verified. There is also no ability to recall commands that have previously been entered, so if you use SQL*Plus, make sure that you keep script files to keep typing to a minimum.
SQL Worksheet is one of the GUI tools provided as part of Oracle Enterprise Manager. It can be started independently from the Oracle Enterprise Manager program group or from the console. When it is started, and a valid username and password have been entered, the window shown in Figure 5.2 is displayed.
