Overview
In this chapter we will learn how we can use and create objects in an Oracle8 database. The objects option is new for Oracle8 and in coming years this is a technology that is going to grow in popularity and usage.
Why Use Objects?
For anyone who has been in this industry for some time, it will come as no surprise that databases have evolved just like many other technologies in our industry. Back in the 1970s it was all the rage to use a network or hierarchical database. Then in the 1980s, databases based on the relational model became very popular. Today, many users of databases can probably be excused for thinking that the only type of database is relational, because this is the one that is receiving all the attention.
Followers of database technology will know that for some time, a new type of database, based on the object model has been purported to be the basis for the next generation of database systems. The uptake on object databases is very slow, probably because most people don't understand what they offer and since relational databases are tried and trusted technology, they prefer to use a technology that will support their business.
