Class A ERP Implementation: Integrating Lean and Six Sigma

Chapter 13: Class a ERP Project Management/Six Sigma Process Integration

OVERVIEW

Class A is all about continuous improvement. As was stated earlier in this book, Class A ERP disciplines are the foundation for good performance. Class A performance in itself is not the end-all or state of perfection. It readies every organization for continuous improvement by providing a management system that requires accountability and process ownership and trains the organization to step up to the requirement of continuous improvement. There is always much more work to be done.

The lean process has been mentioned several times in this Class A ERP discussion, especially within Chapter 11. Six Sigma has also been mentioned, but has not received the right amount of attention yet. In this chapter, we will rectify that situation by showing that Six Sigma, and more specifically project management, is necessary even at the Class A level of performance. Class A's basic building block is shared with both lean and Six Sigma (Figure 13.1). That common denominator is continuous improvement.

Continuous improvement requires employees to be engaged and it requires project management, especially as the low-hanging fruit is eliminated and the tougher tasks start to come to the surface. In many organizations, this is the case. The easy stuff was done years ago. There is no way around it at that point; project management is a requirement.
