Database connectivity in AutoCAD enables you to link drawings to databases, such as Microsoft Access, Oracle, or Microsoft SQL Server. These databases can be used to store data pertaining to individual components of a drawing such as, name of the component, material to be used to manufacture the component, and number of components required. Adding this information to the design helps the production department understand the design better.

You have to first establish a connection with the database in order to store data pertaining to a drawing. This database is then linked to the AutoCAD drawing. The data in the database can then be manipulated from AutoCAD.

This ReferencePoint describes how to connect AutoCAD to a database. This Reference describes how to configure a database and then link AutoCAD drawings to that database. It also describes how exchange data between the database and AutoCAD.

Configuring a Database

You can link a database to graphical objects in AutoCAD using Link Templates and the AutoCAD dbConnect Manager. The database can also link several tables to AutoCAD drawings using a common field.

To configure a database, create a data source for the database. This data source provides information about the drivers needed to access the database.

The following example shows how to configure a data source for an MS Access database, billofmaterial.mdb:
