CNC Programming Techniques: An Insider’s Guide to Effective Methods and Applications

Using 45-degree Tool

A turning tool that has the main cutting edge oriented at 45 is definitely considered a special tool for most machine shops, unless, of course, the standard type of work requires it on a daily basis, for example, in heavy turning. There are certain benefits to using this tool, as compared with a standard tool such as the CNMG type. Consider the following operation a face and a diameter, with a chamfer between. Note that the part is large, but shown in the correct scale (critical dimensions only).

For convenience, the turning tool used is shown in the drawing, in the same scale as the part. Note the setting of the command point it represents the easiest and safest setup at the CNC machine, using the touch-off method.

Both, the inscribed circle (IC) of the insert has to be known (from catalogue data) as well as its cor ner radius ). IC of 12.7 mm indicates a one-half of an inch inscribed circle (insert width).

For machining, the left corner will cut the face, the bottom corner will cut the diameter, and the chamfer will be machined during transition between the face and the diameter. For safety, only one offset will be used, although it will require a few more calculations. Tool T08 is used in the program, with the wear offset 08 (T0808) for the face, chamfer and diameter.

As the tool drawing shows, the command point setting is a combination of X-coordinate for the bottom...
