Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Principles

The ASHRAE heat-balance-based cooling load procedures are included in this manual in two forms. First, the basic equations and algorithms for both the heat balance (HB) and the radiant time series (RTS) methods are shown in Chapter 10. Second, the procedures have been translated into a high-level computer language and are included as a stand-alone program on the disk accompanying this manual.
In past versions of the Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Manual, examples primarily have served to illustrate the proper formulation and use of the equations required by the solution technique under discussion. This was due to the fact that codified procedures were not included with the manual; users were required to write the code themselves either in a spreadsheet or in a high-level language.
The examples in this chapter move beyond the mechanics of the procedures and concentrate on some of the more difficult issues involved in cooling load calculations suspended ceilings, carpet, plenums, and window systems. This shift in emphasis has been effected by writing input-based rather than equation-based examples. The sections that follow show how the interface, which is described in Appendix A, is used to set up the examples. The tables show the information in approximately the same format as the forms of the interface.
