Glossary

8-bit/10-bit encoding: Process of transmitting an 8-bit data value as a 10-bit character. Encoding scheme serves to maximize the number of bit transitions to facilitate clock recovery at the receiver.

AC coupling: The process of adding series capacitance to a transmission line to remove DC elements.
Active State Power Management: A hardware-autonomous power management mechanism to reduce PCI Express link power through hardware management rather than software management.
AGP: Accelerated Graphics Port. Interface used to provide high-speed access to and from a graphics device. Consists of a variety of speeds, including AGP1X, AGP2X, AGP4X, and AGP8X.
ASIC: Application Specific Integrated Circuit. Microchip designed for a specific application with a dedicated use.
assertion (Compliance and Interoperability): Defines design requirements in terms of testable Boolean operations, mapping test pass/fail criteria directly back to design requirements and the related design specification(s). Each item in a checklist may be broken into and tested via one or more assertions.
buffered isolation: Isolation of peripherals and devices from each other by means of providing a mechanism to shield one device from the other.
bus mastering: A mechanism that allows peripherals and devices requiring service to gain immediate and direct control of the bus through an arbitration process. This allows individual devices to master a transaction directly instead of waiting for the host bridge to service the device.
C&I: Compliance and Interoperability. Taken together, these form the basis for measuring a device or function against related design requirements.
