10.8: CONDITION FOR RECIPROCITY

10.8 CONDITION FOR RECIPROCITY

A two-port network is said to be reciprocal if the ratio of the excitation to the response is invariant to an interchange of the positions of the excitation and response in the network as shown in Figure 10.16.

Figure 10.16

According to the condition of reciprocity,

By the condition of 10.16(a) and Figure 10.16(b),

Networks containing resistors, inductors, and capacitors are generally reciprocal. Networks that have dependent sources are generally non-reciprocal.

  1. Condition of reciprocity for Z-parameters,

    By the condition of 10.16(A) V 1 = V s, I 1 = I 1, V 2 = 0,I 2 = ?I ? 2, we get

    By the above two equations, we get

    As in Figure 10.16(b) V2 = V s, I 2 = I 2, V i = 0, I i = ? I ? 1; and we get

    Hence,

    but for the reciprocal network 1 ? 1 = I ? 2, therefore,

  2. Condition of reciprocity for Y-parameters,

    By the condition of Figure 10.16(a) V I = V s, I i = I i, V 2 = 0,1 2 = ?1 ? 2,

    By the condition of Figure 10.16(b) V2 = V s, I 2 = I 2, V 1 = 0, I 1 = ?1 ? 1;

    For reciprocity 1 ? 1 = I ? 2
