TABLE OF CONTENTS In this chapter, we will show how to use maps between several frameworks. We will first show the maps relating CMMI v1.2 to each of the selected ISO standards. Later, based on the information obtained from those maps, we will show how to use them and how to detect framework synergies and gaps. Keep in mind that maps between two frameworks are great tools, but they are only tools. An understanding of the frameworks is needed to use them effectively.
One problem that arises when developing maps between two frameworks is that the authors of each framework are not bound to follow the approaches taken by other frameworks. This often results in incompatible vocabularies, differing architectures, dissimilar process decompositions, and many-to-many relationships among framework requirements. To illustrate these complexities, consider the map between ISO 20000 and CMMI v1.2 shown in Figure 5.1. In this figure, we can see that the requirements of 20000 paragraph 4.4.3 "Continual improvement activities" map to several practices in the OPF, OPD, MA, and OID PAs. Examining one of those CMMI practices, we can also see, for example, that OPD SP 1.1 Establish and Maintain the Organization's Set of Standard Processes, maps to several requirements spread across the ISO 20000 framework. Simple one-to-one relationships are not always to be found.
