Process Improvement with CMMI v1.2 and ISO Standards

ISO 9001: 2000 to CMMI Maps

ISO 9001:2000 to CMMI Maps

We indicated earlier in this chapter that having a terminology comparison between the frameworks helps the creation and understanding of the map. Terms that are essentially equivalent in both standards (such as system or process) are not discussed. Table 5.2 shows how some major ISO and CMMI terms are compared (Mutafelija and Stromberg 2003a, 2003b; Stromberg and Mutafelija 2002, 2004).

By inspecting the ISO 9001 CMMI relationship matrix, we realize that in addition to obvious individual mapping strengths and weaknesses, the more global aspects of those relationships will have to be addressed. An examination of that matrix reveals several trends. For example:

  • Several PAs have very strong and localized maps to a selected set of ISO requirements.

  • Some PAs have very sparse maps where the relationships between PA practices and ISO requirements are scattered over a large number of instances.

  • One ISO 9001 requirement, 7.5.4 "Customer property," did not map to any CMMI practices.

A good example of a disaggregated matrix that shows localized mapping is the relationship of the CAR PA to ISO 9001 requirements as shown in Table 5.3. In matrices of this type we have eliminated all ISO requirements that do not have mappings to the selected CMMI PA(s). The column labeled "Total" shows the sums of all maps...
