In this chapter we have presented the maps relating CMMI v1.2 to each of the selected ISO standards using a CMMI-centric approach. For each shall statement in the ISO standard, the appropriate CMMI SPs or GPs are identified that, when implemented, will satisfy that ISO requirement. To more precisely characterize mappings, we used a confidence factor for each mapping to distinguish between strong and weak relationships. Several PAs have very strong maps, which are localized to a selected set of ISO requirements, and others have very sparse maps where the relationships between PA practices and ISO requirements are scattered over a large number of instances. Thus, some difficulties in developing a consistent process improvement approach may be encountered. We conclude that CMMI can guide an organization in establishing and maintaining a strong process infrastructure while addressing the specific requirements outlined in the ISO standards. Additional ISO-required processes may have to be developed when there is no corresponding process in CMMI. We encourage users of the maps, especially those who are implementing CMMI-based process improvement, to take advantage of framework compatibility and then, using maps as guidance, consider the ISO requirements in the registration process or as best practices in process improvement.

In the next chapter, we will show how the individual maps may be brought together and used for effective process improvement.
