Process Improvement with CMMI v1.2 and ISO Standards

On the surface, when one looks at the ISO 20000-to-CMMI map (and its inverse), it may appear as if those two frameworks are not very compatible. This is no surprise, because they cover different domains: CMMI addresses development processes, whereas ISO 20000 addresses service delivery and management. So why did we decide to include ISO 20000 in this book? There are several reasons. First, the popularity of both of these frameworks and their extensive use in information technology (IT) organizations was an important reason for considering their comparison. The second reason is to take advantage of the use of multiple frameworks for process improvement. Can implementation of one framework help an organization successfully implement another based on their synergy? The third reason addresses the issue of compliance. Can implementation of one framework satisfy the requirements of both frameworks? If not, how much additional effort would be required? We will address the second issue in chapter 6 and the third issue in chapter 7. The SEI, government, and industry are developing the CMMI for Services (CMMISVC), which may help resolve many issues discussed in this section.
As with the other examples of framework maps described in this chapter, the purpose of the ISO 20000-to-CMMI map is to determine the synergy between the ISO standard and CMMI and then, based on this synergy, determine where additional CMMI interpretation is needed.
The synergy between these two frameworks and their specific strengths is shown in Figure 5.5. Because many...
