Coupling / Clamp Torque Limiters and Slip Clutches

Description

Coupling/Clamp Torque Limiters and Slip Clutches are mechanical devices designed to protect machinery from damage due to torque overloads. They function by limiting the amount of torque that can be transmitted through a drive system, thereby preventing excessive force from causing harm to the equipment.

Working Principle

Torque limiters operate by using friction disks or other mechanisms to transmit torque under normal conditions. When a torque overload occurs, the frictional force is overcome, causing the device to slip and disengage the drive, thus preventing damage. Slip clutches, a type of torque limiter, disengage the drive when a preset torque threshold is exceeded, ensuring safety and protection of both personnel and equipment .

Applications

Torque limiters and slip clutches are used in various applications where continuous operation is critical, such as conveyors, gearboxes, and motors. They are particularly useful in scenarios where temporary jams or load increases occur, allowing the machinery to continue operating without incurring damage .

Advantages over other Torque Limiters and Slip Clutches

Ball detent torque limiters offer significant advantages over shear pin technology, including reduced maintenance time and improved disengagement accuracy. They can disengage at a precision of +/-5%, compared to +/-20% for shear pins, making them ideal for protecting sensitive equipment. Additionally, ball detent designs can automatically or manually re-engage, saving time and costs associated with replacing broken components .

Limitations

One limitation of some torque limiters, such as free-wheeling safety clutches, is that they require manual re-engagement after an overload event, which can lead to increased downtime .

Considerations

When selecting torque limiters and slip clutches, considerations should include initial costs, operating expenses, durability, accuracy, and maintenance costs. Mechanical torque limiters can be seen as an expensive luxury compared to electronic torque limiting methods. However, the potential reduction in downtime and prevention of damage often outweigh the initial investment. The choice between different types of torque limiters should also consider the specific requirements of the application, such as the need for precise disengagement or automatic re-engagement .

GERWAH™ Magnetic Hysteresis Couplings -- HKD
from Ringfeder Power Transmission USA Corporation

GERWAH's permanent magnetic hysteresis coupling from the 'HKD' series consists of two separate unsupported halves. The coupling is connected with the shaft by means of clamping hubs. Thanks to its pioneering concept, HKD transmits torque smoothly in a 'sliding' manner which is completely wear-free. [See More]
